Space Geodesy Profiles: Carey Noll

1. 0:04Although most people haven't heard of geodesy, one geodetic technique is GPS.
2. 0:09The GPS in your car can get to your location within let's say tens of meters.
3. 0:17However for measuring plate tectonics, or other geophysical paramaters, scientists need instruments that can provide these measurements much more precisely, to within milimeters.
4. 0:27And the network of GPS receivers that we use can provide that.
5. 0:33My name is Carey Noll. I'm a computer scientist in the Solar System Exploration Division.
6. 0:39I'm also the manager of the Crustal Dynamics Data Information System, or the CDDIS.
7. 0:44The CDDIS is NASA's archive of space geodesy data and products.
8. 0:48A typical day at the CDDIS involves checking to make sure that what went on over the evening, through all of our automated processes, completed successfully.
9. 0:58I meet with the staff to make sure that everything is working correctly, but we also are developing new applications, new ways to present the data.
10. 1:07And then there's also answering tons of email every day to help users find what they're looking for, archive new data sets or information about data,
11. 1:17helping them use the data and the products that we have in the CDDIS.
12. 1:22Well, I probably should say that the most exciting part of working here at Goddard was that I met my future husband.
13. 1:30But being here at Goddard, working with some of the brightest scientists in the world, is a very rewarding thing,
14. 1:36as well as enabling those scientists to do their research through what we do at the CDDIS.
15. 1:43I've been working at Goddard for over thirty-one years and it's been a very rewarding experience.
