- Welcome to another episode of IT From the Heart, a podcast that gets to the heart of all things IT.
- Now, we're here to clear up any misunderstandings, debunk any myths, and get you on the right IT path.
- Now, today's guest is from NASA OCIO
- Software License and Asset
- Management Office or SLAM.
- Now, where should we start?
- Speak from the heart.
- Okay.
- The one thing that we all need to know is that only NASA approved software is authorized for use.
- Really?
- Yes. You cannot download anything without NASA approval.
- Well, what if it's free, open source, trial?
- No, no. Doesn't matter. Well, what else? No.
- Only NASA approved software is authorized for use.
- But how do you know if it's approved or not?
- The only way to know if it's approved is to go through the proper channel,
- which is the Commercial IT Requests Process, or CITR.
- Oh, I see.
- So if you want to use software at NASA you first have to go to CITR or C.I.T.R.
- and get it approved.
- And then NASA's happy, right?
- Not yet.
- Not yet?
- Well, then you have to fully read and understand the end user license agreement.
- You mean like the terms and conditions?
- Exactly.
- The end user is personally responsible for reading the terms and conditions
- so that they understand how they're allowed to use the software.
- Okay.
- So after I put in a CITR request and read the terms and conditions, then everyone's happy.
- Maybe.
- You should know if you're ever approached by a vendor, or a publisher, asked to run scripts, or maybe even suggest
- they're going to audit, you should contact SLAM first and let us help.
- Many times they're just trying to get you to show you're not compliant,
- so don't give them any information without talking to SLAM first.
- Well, that's good to know that SLAM will help with any software audit.
- I'll definitely write that one down.
- Now once I get that done, are we good?
- One more thing.
- You need to uninstall and completely remove any unused software on your NASA computer.
- Well, thank you very much for being here and thank you for all the helpful information.
- Thank you for having me.
- And that's all the time we have for today.
- Please don't forget to like and subscribe and see you next week on IT From the Heart.
